Injuries are one of the worst things that can happen to an athlete. They can leave you sidelined during important races or games, or worse, can permanently hinder your ability to perform in your sport. The good news is, a lot can be done to prevent injury through quality exercise.
Your trainer can work with you to strengthen the areas of the body that are most injury prone, such as the lower back, hamstrings, shoulder joints and quadriceps that control the knee. When careful attention is paid to these areas, they can withstand the physical pressures and rigors of your sport.
Another major injury preventative is stretching. With proper stretching before and after workouts, your muscles will be long and flexible and go through the proper range of motion rather than pulling or tearing. Many professional trainers and their athletes have come to value the great amounts of flexibility that used to be associated with gymnasts and ballerinas.
Core strength and stability also play a great role in injury prevention. Having a strong core will support your spine and also provide for proper form and muscle and bone mechanics while performing the skills involved with your sport. It is also important to avoid imbalanced muscles throughout your body. For example, an over-developed quadricep with a weaker hamstring or calf can lead to knee pain or injury when running or jumping.
