How can you make a gym acquaintance become something a little more substantial? We all have varying circumstances that demand different approaches, as well as unique social styles, but the 3 steps below will help you nab a gym buddy at your next group personal training session.
1. Strike up a conversation before class starts. Say something like, “Have you been to this class before?” Whatever the answer is, ask some follow-ups, but avoid questions that require one-word answers, such as “Do I need a mat?” Rather ask something with the potential to open up a conversation, such as “What do you like about this group personal training class?” or “Have you tried any other classes here?”
2. Empathize during the workout. Whether it’s sharing laughter when you mess something up, or commiserating with eye contact during a brutal set of squats, empathizing is a great way to build an instant connection.
3. Debrief after the session. Try something like, “I really needed that!” Then add in a few words about your non-gym life – maybe “I helped my friend move this weekend so my arms are crazy sore”, or “I’m so out of shape because I just got back from vacation”, or “I haven’t done group personal training like that since I was in college!”
