Meal planning is a great way to eat healthy and save money. When you plan what you will eat each day and get the correct groceries and prepare things ahead of time, you won’t find yourself in the drive-thru line getting unhealthy fast food at the last minute.
If you’ve never done meal planning before, however, you may feel a little overwhelmed at creating a menu for you and your family ahead of time. Don’t give up; there are many tips out there to help you get started, and you will soon have the hang of it.
You can begin by making a list of the healthy meals you like to eat, so you can remember all your options for your plan. Then go through what you already have in your fridge and pantry, so you can be sure to use foods before they go bad. Plan your meals around what you have – for example, if you have bell peppers, put fajitas on the menu. Some people recommend repeating your menu every two weeks, or creating a daily theme (such as Mexican on Mondays or leftovers every Friday) to simplify the meal planning process. You can plan for a week, two weeks, or even a month at a time– whatever works for you.
Once you have your menu, make your grocery list and shop for all the additional foods you need. Then stick to the plan, being sure to defrost or marinate meats or whip up a dressing ahead of time to make meal prep easier. Soon you will be enjoying the benefits to your health and your wallet while eating delicious homemade food.
